Main Altar, São Bento de Olinda

Altar of Sao Bento of Olinda of Brazil is on exhibit in New York to pay tribute to the victims of September 11.

The Rococo, Baroque style altar was designed and sculpted between 1783 and 1786.

Many famous historians such as Germain Bazin and Erobert C. Smith have studied this altar. They said that it is possible to find similarities in an altar that is located in the city of Braga, Portugal.

Friar Miguel Arcanjo de Assuncao is responsible for the altars trip to New York. In the region of Olinda there are many altars similar to the Altar of Sao Bento of Olinda. This altar is a real work of art and a perfect example of Brazilian Colonial Art.
